Here we Go! Take a spin and get started on CLUE 1!!
Stumped? Check the Cheat Sheet (Linked above) At this site, there are three posters up in local businesses. ALL are well-known as Seattle-based chains! Find the poster at any one of three businesses on the main Avenue (named after the area and the beach) .... - An espresso & coffee company that's been growing since 1971 - (however the coffee place that lays claim to the 'oldest' espresso bar is Cafe Allegro, in a Seattle neighborhood that used to be called 'Brooklyn'... more on that, later). This particular coffee place was started originally at Pike Place Market by writer Jerry Baldwin, and teachers Gordon Bowker and Zev Siegl, and named after a character from the novel 'Moby Dick'. or - A donut shop chain started by two brothers in 2002: the 'S' fell off their re-used sign when they loaded it into their truck: So they had to change the name from "TopSpot" and had a coffeepot placed there, to fill the gap, instead. or - Another local biz that also has a well-loved Seattle location on Green Lake. The business is named after the nickname for a vegetable (tubers) that are fried & salted to create one half of the term "Fish & Chips"! Their old-fashioned blue and white decor, and the not-to-be-hurried pace, help to keep the area rooted in days gone by. Also started by two brothers (in this case, English-born), this Fish & Chips business was founded in 1935, a full three years before Ivar Haglund first opened his Fish & Chip stand at his waterfront aquarium! Find the poster - see the art - get the next clue - enjoy the city ! |

SPOILERS AHEAD!! Do not scroll down if you want Clue 2 to be a surprise!
CLUE 2
This is the place the Denny party retreated to, after trying out Alki, where Doc Maynard already had some land claims. Yesler built a mill, creating jobs, and Doc introduced everyone to the man he called 'Chief Seattle'. A new name was inspired for the city here by this First Nations elder. A pioneering spirit was essentially in 1889 when everything, for a time, went up in smoke! Even the underground areas have stories to tell in the old square here!
You'll find Posters, with the NEXT clue, at ANY of the follow places:
- There's a tour business that, while it isn't the same as 'Underground Seattle', does indeed go deep (underground) into Seattle's history in the square. This business's name could also be said as 'Under the Roads' - If you see how you might cherry pick your street, (and your coffee), then look to the right to see the right path! Head downstairs into spookiness and the gift of the poster may be found in that area!
or [Update!]
- At the base of what was once the Olympic Building (until 1972), and was later rebuilt in 1986 with a similar silhouette as the Olympic Block Building, there is a corner coffee shop. This is across the street from the famous Pioneer Square Pergola. In fact, probably no other coffee company in Seattle has as many corner cafes as this famous Seattle-founded Coffee Biz. Look low in one of the windows, at kid height, while standing along Yesler to find the poster.
or
- A National Park & Historical Site in a downtown city building? Yes! Ask the park rangers here about the history of the great 'Gold fever' that swept through Seattle and put it on the map (setting it up for the Alaska Yukon World's fair, and then later, the Century 21 World's Fair that created the Space Needle!). This clue site, once called the Cadillac Hotel, is on Second Ave (and across the street from a coffee shop with a name that means 'spirit of the times' or 'time ghost'). And, the site, as a national park AND 'museum' is both fun & educational in some of the best ways! If you've found the Waterfall Garden park, head south past the Seattle Fire Dept HQ, just one block!
